Thailand Islands,
a drop in the ocean.
Actually, which ocean ? It's partly the
Indian Ocean - Andaman Sea- and the Gulf of Thailand, left and right
border.
Thailand Islands are
like strings of beach-fringed pearls with lush tropical jungle, set
amid warm tropical waters, emerald seas and are one of the country's
biggest draws.
Phuket, Koh Samui, Phi Phi, Koh Chang,
Koh Tao, the Similan and Surin Islands in the Andaman Sea, plus the
dozens of islands in the Tarutao Archipelago close to Malaysia have
all become well-established destinations.
There are other small, pristine and
untouched Thailand islands in the Trang Archipelago and off the Krabi coast
and in the Phang Nga Bay area.
For the adventure minded who seek an
island retreat without the crowds, but with all the comfort and
service, it starts at the eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand with
Koh Chang, closer to Bangkok and the crowd is Koh Samet.
On the western side of the Gulf of
Thailand off Chumphon and slightly north of Koh Samui is Koh Tao,
dedicated to scuba diving.
Off Krabi coast one can enjoy the
relaxed charm of Koh Lanta, with excellent
accommodation and easy access, but the two Koh Lanta's it
needs to use the ferry, which takes quite some patience during high
season.
Koh Samet
is a favorite
Bangkok weekend destination and that means
its overcrowded, its to near to Bangkok for
a pristine experience.
|
|
Koh Samet is 6km long
and less than 500m wide at its narrowest
point, that means, the sea is never far
away.
In Bangkok go to the Eastern Bus Terminal
near Ekamai Skytrain station in Bangkok and
take the bus. It takes two and a half hour
minutes and costs 150 baht. There take a
taxi or motocyc to Ban Phe Phe to get the
ferry to Koh Samet.

Koh Chang
Koh Chang -30km
long, Thailand's second biggest island after
Phuket- was so little known it hadn't even
made it into backpackers' guide books.
Today
it's Thailand's fourth biggest island
destination after Phuket, Samui and Phi Phi.
Trat Town in
Trat province is next airport with the
express purpose of turning Koh Chang into a
new Phuket. Koh Chang's beaches are a little
bit difficult to access due to the high
island hills with steep slopes as you can
see in the pictures.
Koh Chang is part of an
archipelago that makes up a national park.
All boats from the mainland, there are
several jetties, arrive on the east side of
the island.
The west side is where all the
best beaches are to be found.
The very
difficult to access interior is mostly
untouched mountainous rainforest filled with
wild boar, snakes, tropical birds and
beautiful exotic flowers.
There are also
some easily accessible waterfalls, great for
freshwater dips.
Use either the airplane to Trat airport or
the bus to Trat out of Bangkok to ge there.
Keep in mind that Cambodia is only about 100
km away.
A journey could be easily extended
to have a quick look into Cambodia out of
Koh Chang or rather Trat Town. The bus to
Cambodia leaves at Trat Town.

Coming to Phuket means,
you enter fun
and pleasure
county, plenty of beaches, fairways for your golf passion,
great nightclub's,
pleasure bar's, restaurant's on the beach with food and
drinks letting you drift away, because of the relaxed atmosphere of Phuket
Island.
If you want to have it calm
and your wallet or credit card account has enough
reserve try Phuket
Laguna.
Phuket Laguna is an attractive assembly of upper market hotels and villas,
about 20 kilometers north of Phuket Town around some
artificial lagoons and a beachfront. .
The route
from there to Phuket Town (via the
bypass road)
leads directly to the shopping malls strip on the west
outskirts of Phuket Town.
The southern
tip of Phuket at Cap Panwa is about 15 km south of
Phuket Town, so is Rawai Beach on the south western end of
Phuket Island.
Less than one percent of the area of Phuket was affected by the
tsunami disaster - resulting in no major long-term impact on the
island. Everything is just the same as before.
Famous nightlife and excellent hotels for every
size of wallet are available; the girls (and the ones who look like
a girl but are not) are also trying to make you happy, its business
as usual, in Thailand everything is business. More on
Phuket and
here.
Phuket has some
of the best beaches on this planet .with breathtaking panoramas and many variants of
Thai beaches.
Some Phuket beaches are lined with Palm trees, others with pine
trees but almost all of them are beautiful.
Since many years
now they have continuous campaigns to keep the beaches clean,
before it was very common for the local people just to drop
everything at the moment one wont need the stuff anymore.
This is
especially ugly with all this rubbish plastic bags, they usually
blamed the foreigners to do this, but everyone know this is not
true, but there have been great improvement after the local people
started to understand they can make better money with a clean
Phuket
Island environment.

Islands of the Trang
Archipelago.
The Trang Archipelago is
probably the best kept secret in southern Thailand.
A mysterious
cave, the Morakot or emerald cave is a real highlight of
the Trang Archipelago.
The cave entrance approximately 10 m wide - partially
is under water and can be entered at low tide with a Kayak,
of course one can swim in also through the approximately 80
m long canal.
At the end of the canal
the rock formation opens upward into a big hall and you can
see the sky, as you can see in the above picture or photo
A very beautiful Trang
area with attractive beaches, secluded islands,
hidden beach resorts also for the rather low budget.
A good infrastructure in Trang, interesting
sightseeing tours and so on. So why there are only a
few foreigners around in Trang at any given time, no
one know maybe its not so bad anyway.
Trang can be reached from Bangkok by daily flights
and per road from Phuket, Krabi, Bangkok and so on.
The province has no Muslim problem and is ready for
discovering and exploring.
A whole lot of
Islands invites a Robinson play, one of the more
interesting and bigger is Ko Muk, (Ko or Koh for
island).
Libong island is interesting for birdwatcher,
specifically during the “colder” season (December -
April) waders can be spotted, like Crab Plover, Joo
Hoy Cape and Toog Beach are a good watching site.
On the Islands you may see otters, water
monitor, pacific reef-egret, white-bellied sea
eagle, monitor lizards, longtail macaques, dusky
langurs, wild boar, pangolin, little heron etc. The sea grass beds are the main spawning and
feeding area for diverse species.

The Similan islands in the Andaman sea
just off Kao Lak
or Khao Lak is one of the best diving
grounds on this planet. There are several
different names used for the Similan
Archipelago like Ko Similan, Koh Similan or mu Ko Similan. Actually it all means the
same, Similan Islands.
You can reach
the Similan Islands Thailand either by a
drive out of Phuket, after about 100 km a
road branches off to the left for the Tap
Lamu Pier where all boats, including dive boads are waiting.
Some travel
agents are around just book what you like,
you could do this also at any travel agent
in Phuket Island, they will carry you in the
morning, at about six am to the pier.
If you are on
your just try to reach the pier around 8 am
since this about the time the boats are
leaving. If you still have some time left try
a fresh Barracuda steak in one of the
restaurants at the pier, they bring the big
fishes in every morning
A other way
would be to book a hotel in Khao Lak and do
the scuba or snorkeling tour from there, or
maybe by life aboard out of Phuket.
The Similan's
have been declared a national park several
years ago to keep the area somehow under
control from the real estate sharks and
encroachers, this guys get very easy out of
control when they see some money on the
horizon.
The earthquake which triggered the Tsunami
was not felt but the Tsunami washed away
lots of structures on the Khao Lak
beachside.
The Similan
Islands Thailand are somehow more pearls of
the ocean beside the islands of Thailand
like Ko Chang, Ko Lanta, Ko Lipe in the
Tarutao Archipelago near the border to
Malaysia. |

Of course there
is also Ko Phi Phi, Ko Samui und many other
Thai Islands.
For more info
on
Similan tours timing
and booking check here.
Since the Similan Islands are mainly a
target for scuba diving the scuba tour
operators also offer padi qualification.
Many of the Similan live
aboard tours operate out of
Phuket the biggest island in
Thailand 100 km to the
south. Similan diving is real great
as you can see looking at
the Similan photos have a
Similan dive when you are
around in southern
Thailand you wont regret.
Similan islands are mainly
for diving, there are no
real accommodations on the
islands, only a few Thai
style bungalows on the main
island, they are almost all
the time fully booked and
not in a very good
condition. |

One of the absolute "hottest" island

Thailand is for sure not
Samui paradise, its to
chaotic to be paradise, but
its not bad. The most
interesting are the beaches,
but there are other things
to relax, maybe a elephant
ride, a swim in the in
a waterfall basin etc.
There are plenty of beach
on Koh Samui Island Thailand,
a busy beach like Samui
Chaweng beach is on for
almost 24 hour and there are
the other beaches like Lamai
Beach on Samui where there
is a more relaxing
atmosphere und there are
plenty of other Samui
beaches.
Almost all Samui Island
beaches are lined with
palm trees, have good sand
and plenty of Samui
beach resorts, hotels, clubs
around.
Ko Samui Islands
bungalows are offered in
any price range so is Samui
accommodation, the closer to
the Samui beach the higher
the price.
Bungalow on Ko Samui
are sometimes quite solid
and have a good quality, but
you also can have the grass
hut with palm leaves on top,
only the Sky is the limit in
Samui.
One of the nicer hotels
and not so expensive is the
Blue Lagoon at Koh Samui,
Chaweng Beach. A good
swimming pool and direct
entrance from the rooms into
the emerald sea, just in
front. There are plenty of
other Ko Samui resort just
beside, behind, further up
and further down.
Club's at Samui are
plenty and usually
discos in the evening some
are integrated into hotels
in Ko Samui.
Naturally there are all
kind of spa at Ko Samui,
some within Koh Samui's
resort & spa's and other spa
are just a stand alone
venture.
Wherever you go you will
find Samui coconut. The
main business on Koh Samui
Island before the tourist
boom was centered around the
coconuts and this is still
very visible today.
Almost every day the
coconuts of the island are
burning. A other version
around Samui Island coconuts
is the Coconut Monkey.
In Koh Samui Island
as well as in other parts of
Thailand monkeys are trained
to climb up the palm tree
and turn the coconut until
it breaks and falls down.
The monkeys are on a long
rope around the neck, every
pull of the monkey owner
really hurt them.

Tarutao Archipelago & Islands in Thailand
|
The Tarutao
archipelago are dozens of pristine
islands in Tarutao national marine park, a
Thailand province in the Andaman Sea.
Around the
second world war Ko Tarutao functioned
as a prison gulag for political prisoners.
Now Ko Tarutao national marine park
has emerged as a great island destination in
Thailand. Tarutao islands are a little bit
off the usual Thailand tourist tracks, far
in the south, off in the ocean near the
Malaysian border, Langkawi Island in
Malaysia can be spotted on a clear day and
Penang is
about 200 km further south.
From Ban Pak Bara at the end of highway 4052
in Satun province southern Thailand
ships are
leaving for the Tarutao archipelago, mainly
for Koh Tarutao, the main island with the
National Park Headquarter and some bungalows
on different beaches. The same ship travel
further to Koh Lipe after dropping people at
Koh Tarutao.

Koh Tarutao Island Boats Thailand
Island beaches are plenty, diving the
island is great but its primary snorkeling,
since there is no real scuba diving base
around. Some small island resorts are
around in the form of beach bungalow
clusters, you can also camp on the beaches
is you like.
On Koh Lipe
is sea gypsies land and they rent out
some kind of small houses, there is a
continuous struggle between the moken sea
gypsies and other Thai from the mainland who
have more money and try to take away the
land from them with all kind of tricks.
Since officially this is a Thai national
marine park no one can build anything
anywhere with the exception of the Moken
because they have been living there before
it war declared a national park.
Actually the
Moken or as they are called Salon in
Myanmar's Andaman Sea
came to the islands probably 2000 years ago,
no one actually knows any real figures.
Tarutao
Thailand or the south islands are a real
great destination to get away.
