Southern Thailand has
many interesting and attractive places like Ranong where usually
very few visitors go.
One "undiscovered" place
is the area around Ranong, Thailand's least populated area. The
little problem with Ranong is the location. Behind Ranong are
mountains and at this mountains the clouds coming in from the
Andaman Sea / Indian Ocean stall. That means lot of rains all year
around. The town of Myeik or Mergui as it was know under the British
colonial time a little bit further up in Myanmar is one of wettest
place on earth because of that.
Ranong is also the main Thailand port
on the Westside with a
huge fishing fleet.
Every evening the refrigerator trucks start their rally from Ranong
to Bangkok, to reach the markets on time with the fresh catch.
Ranong is also a busy port and the gateway to trips into southern
Myanmar
(Burma), mainly diving excursions, also very popular
for the Thailand "Visa Run" out of
Phuket,Samui
etc..
That means if the Thailand visa expires you can quickly take a tour
to Myanmar on the other side of the bay, come back and get the new
immigration stamp into the passport. Some companies in Phuket and
elsewhere offer tour programs to handle this. The biggest company
offering this service is the one who runs a off shore casino on a
island on the Myanmar side.
They have their own jetty in Ranong
port and carry you straight to the hotel and casino, there you get a
visa and also if you
like do some gambling. |
|
Gambling is strictly forbidden in Thailand but almost everyone does
it, gambling and betting is very popular
in Thailand, there are continuous raids on gambling den's who
are operated under the protection of "influential" people. In the last couple of years many casinos where opened in the
neighboring countries to serve the ever growing appetite
of the Thais |

Ranong in Ranong province southern Thailand is one of the
real attractions in Thailand. Its less a Thailand beach
destination and also has no luxury hotels like Phuket
Thailand, but Ranong is full of green, trees, jungle and has
a couple
of beautiful islands around.
The trip from
Phuket or
Samui to Ranong is very popular for
the visa run. Its the trip to
Kawthaung in southernmost
Myanmar or Burma and come back for a new visa. |

Here you can find Ranong pictures, Ranong photo and a great
Ranong
photo gallery with pictures from Ranong harbor, fish
trawler and a great water world between the islands. There
are a few hotels and other accommodations around even for
the backpacker Thailand level.
Ranong on the Andaman sea is the home of one of Thailand's
biggest fishing fleet.
The Ranong casino on a island just right in Myanmar waters
is a destination for Thai gamblers.
Diving around Phuket and Ranong is usually during a live
aboard trip into the Mergui Archipelago north of Ranong or
to the Similan Island plus Surin Island further south on the
coast between Phuket and Ranong.
A Phuket vacation could include a trip to Ranong since the
trip from Phuket to Ranong brings totally different pictures as just around at
Phuket Island. Ranong has not the same Thailand climate as
Phuket. The area from Mergui in Myanmar or Burma all the way
down to Ranong receives plenty of rain throughout the year
with less during November to April.
South of Ranong is extensive fish and shrimp farming in the
plains between the coastal hills and the seaside.
Plenty of Ranong Thailand tourist attractions are around in
form of hot springs, waterfalls, lush tropical vegetation
and some nice beaches, unfortunately the beaches around
Ranong are not maintained to a standard level.
You could do a Ranong Thailand tour during a Thailand
vacation, its worth it and easy done, just take the bus fron
the Phuket bus terminal and off you go, it costs around baht
300,- and takes around 3-4 hours for one way. Flights to
Rangon are only out of Bangkok. No need to care about the
hotel, there are enough and quite low priced.
