Phuket known history
started quite long ago. Ptolemy mentioned that on travel to the
Malaysian peninsula, one would have to pass a cape which he
called the Junk Ceylon. A location between
the latitudes of 6 N and 8 N was indicated for Junk Ceylon which is
more or less the position of present
day. It seems that the Junk Ceylon was frequently by ships
from Europe, Arab and Indian
countries plus Chinese.
The area
around offered protection against
storms and the possibility opportunity to rest and restock.
The island become later known as Thalang
after the city which
still exists in the
center of the Island.
The Mon
in
southern Myanmar
or Burma were also also known as Thalangs. There
are plenty of interesting connections between
Thailand and
Myanmar
or Burma. Another important event
was in 1785 when troops from
neighboring Burma tried to |
|
|
|
|
invade the island. The former
governor’s widow, Chan, and her
sister Muk organized the
defense, the assault lasted nearly a
month. Another important part in history was
the "Tin Age".
The island together with Malaysia
became
the leading tin mining
producer in the region, actually it was mainly Chinese immigrant
labor who did the job. Due to the
local mining industry the place
become somewhat of a trading hub.
The local mining industry lifted the
area into a
trading hub and Chinese merchants
made lots of money, this is still
visible today in form of marvelous
villas in Sino - Portuguese Style in
the town, see picture at right. |
|
|
The Thai King of that period decided
that the island should be
administered by a European, because
of the large volume of European
merchants and traders who took
residence on the island. Between the
period of 1681 and 1685, Thalang was
administered by a French missionary
named Renee Charbonneau.
Today this villas, great pieces of
Sino - Portuguese Architecture are
used for touristy purposes and the
area around experience the usual
Thai way of encroaching to make
quick money. |

There
are some more Phuket town history
traces and visibilities around Dibuk
Street and Phang Nga Road which is
visualized in old but sometimes very
pretty old Chinese houses, its very
similar to Penang Georgetown. Which
has a similar historic pattern than
this Thailand island, the biggest in
the country, also the nightlife is
quite ok.

If you are some
where on the island for vacation, dedicate a
