Phuket Kings Cup Regatta
started in 1987
to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the
King of Thailand.
Over time it
became Asia’s premier sailing and
yachting regatta event and held every year in
the first week of December to commemorate
His Majesty’s birthday on December 5th.
Boats from all over Asia,
Australia, Europe and other countries come
to Phuket to find the best. Phuket Kings
Cup Regatta works in several categories, sail boat
racing / cruising, catamaran racing /
cruising and more.
Battles played out
on Phuket's south west coast remind
sometimes at the
ancient marine battles between the English,
French, Portuguese and Dutch.
About 2,000
regatta participants coming in from 25
countries of all over the world. They come,
to salute the King of Thailand on his 81st
birthday, via the 22nd Phuket King's Cup
Regatta from Dec 2-6.
The Phuket King's Cup Regatta Committee for
the first time in the two decades of doing
the regatta, decided on just four days of
racing, counting the first dayas practice
race day and incorporating the traditional
Thursday lay-day as regular racing.
The 22nd regatta opened as usual at Kata
Beach and tribute was paid to the ongoing
principal sponsor, Raimon Land, which has
agreed to underwrite the regatta through
2012.
