tourist from all over the world into Kanchanaburi town.
Many people travel to
exotic places such as Thailand to find breathtaking beauty that

cultural activities in the border area between Thailand Myanmar
around Kanchanaburi, Mae Sot, Mae Hong Son, Umphang and other
adventure places in Thailand.
Thailand's
Kanchanaburi province has a lot to offer, mountain jungle
trekking, rafting, green nature, great river resorts along the River
Kwai, kayaking, fishing, hiking, wildlife, music, tasty Thai food,
use the small hotels around Kanchanaburi town and along the River
Kwai for a great time, plus several spectacular waterfalls such as

The real “nature show” goes on in the rugged mountains from
Kanchanaburi town towards the
three pagoda pass at the border with
Myanmar or Burma. It’s a wonderful blend of jungle, reservoirs,
rivers, caves, waterfalls, trekking, hiking, rafting, boat river
cruise, just name it. Several companies in offer boat and raft trips
o cruise with a long tail boat would also not be so bad, check the boat first because most of the long
tail boat’s have no muffler on the engine and this could bring
awful noise. The Thai guys handling this boats
are almost deaf already.
Trekking tours are offered into the mountain hills by several
companies, it could include elephant rides and bamboo rafting trips,
if you take the cheapest it will bring you trouble. All this is integrated into some of
-Thailand’s most
spectacular National Parks and Wildlife Reserves.
Kanchanaburi is Thailand’s third
largest province and stretches over an area of about 20.000
square kilometers. Kanchanaburi is not far from Bangkok - just about
about 130 kilometers to the west and this is the reason why
Kanchanaburi town and the area around are becoming the famous Thai
traffic gridlock every weekend when the local tourists from Bangkok
move in, its like Bangkok |

rush hour at 6pm. Kanchanaburi travel
attractions are the famous bridge over the River Kwai and plenty of waterfalls, caves, jungle
and several rivers which are blocked by a huge dam.
Outdoor is in, check with a local
tour operator for mountain biking, rafting by
inflatable rubber boats and bamboo rafts.
Thailand adventure trekking is
popular, so is fishing, if you are a golf enthusiast play
golf, its all here. For the
Bridge over the River Kwai and the so
called Death Railway have a look here.
The
best way to go to Kanchanaburi is naturally by car. There is
a good 4 lane highway all the way from Bangkok and also if
you come from the south of Thailand means Hua Hin and
southwards.
Busses to Kanchanaburi and
the River Kwai Bridge are available several times a day out of
Bangkok. Avoid to travel on weekends. At that time Bangkok
is on the run, means the travel gets like driving on
Sukhumvit Friday afternoon. Busses leave at the Southern Bus
Terminal more or less hourly.
If you are more after a adventure trip you might
take a train. Trains to Kanchanaburi start at Thon Buri
Station Bangkok, one leave in the morning another in the
afternoon, check for the exact time.

Train travel takes about five hour. Some micro buses
leave from Khao
San Road. Check with a travel agent at Bangkok for where
and when the buses to Kanchanaburi start. If you are more
adventurous and ready for a real Thailand adventure tour you
can take a bicycle or a small motorbike or scooter and make
the tour from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, since the whole
countryside is very flat its not a big
|
|
problem, the only real big
problem is the road traffic since no one cares about
the other and most traffic rules, its a real road
jungle out there. If you want to do the ride don't
do it on the weekend there is simply to much traffic
for healthy driving, its just like Sukhumvit Road in
Bangkok at Fridays rush hour. |
Once you are at Kanchanaburi the best is to take a "motcyctaxi"
check for songthaews (pickups) or taxi if you like to travel
further outside Kanchanaburi Town, like to Erawan Waterfall,
Sai Yok Waterfall or have a look at the River Kwai Bridge, looks
real great, for more on the periphery have a look here for
National Park in
the area.

It was Thailand’s King Rama 1 who established
Kanchanaburi as a
bulwark against the continues raids into the Kingdom by
Burmese armies who even conquered Ayutthaya -the former
capital- in 1767 and totally destroyed the city.
Along the River Kwai
Noi is the road to the
three Pagoda Pass at the Thai -
Myanmar border. That's the way where since hundreds of years the
Burmese came in, bringing war to Thailand, but today
its totally peaceful, Thailand Myanmar hasn't seen
any war since long time only the Karen at the
border make trouble from time to time. Actually
there are two |
|

River Kwai Bridge

Erawan waterfall |
|
River
Kwai, one is River Kwai Noi (noi means
little) where the "death railway" runs along
and the River Kwai Yai (yai means big) a
little bit further north, they both join at
Kanchanaburi Town.
Therefore the
three Pagoda Pass
is a politically very
sensitive place and if something happen
-from time to time both armies exchange fire
- sometimes the Thai and sometimes the
Myanmar's close the three Pagoda Pass
for a while.
Kanchanaburi is a ideal place for tourists, nature lover, bird
watcher and travelers since the area west
from Kanchanaburi |

has not been
developed beside of 2 huge
reservoirs. the area around the
three Pagoda Pass on the border from Thailand to
Myanmar in the west of Kanchanaburi province is a real attraction.Dip
into the basin of a waterfalls, do
some rafting and stay overnight in
one of the floating raft houses
moored at the banks of the river
Kwai. Do a elephant ride at the
Elephant’s World, this is a
protection home for aged, injured
and stray elephants built into their
natural habitat. The Kanchanaburi
Elephant’s World is about 30km
northwest of the Kanchanaburi City.
There are always about 10 elephants
in the stable of 10 elephants, young
and old. Visitors can feed the
elephants banana and pineapple and
play with them them in the river.
-The
Kanchanaburi Historical Park is
located at Sai Yok
by the banks
of the Kwai Noi River. Some
artifacts are dating back 1,800
years, including skeletons in a
grave, utensils made from bronze and
agate and carnelian beads (both semi
precious stones) were found, shown
at the provincial museum in
Kanchanaburi town.
The
ruins at the Kanchanaburi Muang Sing
Historical Park are the remnants
of a Khmer kingdom from a bygone
era. Probably the remains of a
Mahayana temple constructed under
King Jayavarman VII who was also
responsible for Angkor Thom and was
King of Cambodia for about 30 years
in the 13th century.
Also
at Sai Yok district is the Tiger Temple
which began as a forest monastery
and was founded by Phra Acharn
Phoosit in 1994. In the early days
villagers brought injured animals to
the temple to get them fit again, In
1999 the first tiger baby was
brought to the temple by a villager.
Today the tiger count has risen to
about 50 and there are plenty of
other animals around. The entrance
fee is 300 baht for Thai and 500
baht for foreigners. If you have
more cash available you can play
with the tigers |

Others of interest: Some national
parks, river rafting and boating
trips plus a very exotic
atmosphere along the Thai-Myanmar border.
Through Kanchanaburi province also runs the
first gas pipeline out of Myanmar - Burma. The
pipeline starts at the Yadana and Yetagun field
south and southwest of the Gulf of Martaban and ends
near Bangkok in a electricity generation facility |
