- Erawan Waterfall at Erawan National Park close to the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi
Province is one of the most spectacular
waterfall in Thailand.
The ride from
Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and the Erawan Waterfalls
is only about 3 hours
and that means if the weather is fine the sun out and weekend
or holiday, around
Erawan
National Park is like
Bangkok rush hour Friday late afternoon.
Behind the
entrance and after a short walk the lower level of the
Erawan waterfall becomes visible. The water with a beautiful
turquoise shade splash down limestone formations over seven
levels, a 1.5 kilometers trail in a tropical jungle runs
beside the waterfall all the way up to the top. Usually
visitors just have a look for the lower 3 or 4 levels of the
Erawan falls. If you are not in very good physical condition
you have a problem to do the climb up the trail. There are
even very steep stairs between the limestone boulders. On
the trek up you pass jungle giants and bamboo thickets. On the upper level the water runs over a huge
boulder, giving the impression of a three-headed elephant,
this is why the waterfall’s name is Erawan, the Hindu
elephant god.
Since each tier of the Erawan falls has a pool one
could interrupt the hike up and have a little swim, if you
visit the falls come early since they close the entrance at
5pm and don't come at the weekend since it will be
overcrowded by the people coming in from Bangkok and
elsewhere.
The day trip buses from Bangkok are in by dozens,
minibuses plenty, the bass bangs out from the buses with
full power, Thai people like noise, the more the better.

array of
waterfalls over 7 levels. Erawan National Park close to the River Kwai and
the other Kanchanaburi National Parks is a great
Thailand
travel spot which should be included in every
Bangkok trip, if you wont go there you will miss
something. Entrance fee to Erawan Waterfall is back to normal, Baht 200,-
only Similan Islands marine NP is still Baht 400,-
Plenty of hotels,
bungalows, River Kwai resorts and guest houses are lining
the River Kwai
in the
Erawan Waterfall
area near
Kanchanaburi
city
Thailand. Since
Erawan National
Park is relatively close to Bangkok, its a
short ride from 3-4 hours on excellent roads, its
the right weekend tour. Many
other sightseeing spots are around, such as the
River Kwai Bridge and
some other waterfalls, among them the
Sai
Yoke Waterfall just beside the road.
Kayaking, canoeing,
rafting and other activities plus elephant rides are
available in this beautiful tropical environment.
Kanchanaburi
has a pleasant weather pattern and you wont need any
travel guide, just ask the hotel and browse our
website. You
can find similar waterfalls and environment over the
Myanmar Thailand border further west at the "Three
Pagoda Pass" and elsewhere in neighboring Myanmar or
Burma check
Myanmar adventure travel.
The River Kwai Bridge, known
almost to everyone because of the great film
The Bridge over the River Kwai made by David Lean
is the major tourist spot in the area, but there are
more spectacular views of more waterfalls, lakes and
the dark River Kwai coming down from the hilly
jungle of the Thailand Myanmar border area into the
Khao Laem Reservoir and after the dark green clean water
pours down between
jungle thickets, only from time to time some places are
cleared to give way for some River Kwai river resorts and small hotels. Erawan falls in the Erawan National Park are a real
spectacle and one of Thailand's great nature
attractions, its worth to travel to Erawan Falls when you
are in Bangkok.
You could also have a romantic time on a raft
floating down the River Kwai.
Kanchanaburi Thailand has
several National Parks among them is the
Sai Yok
with a great waterfall just nearby. This
|
Waterfall
is just beside the
road from Kanchanaburi to the
Three Pagoda Pass at the
Myanmar Thailand border.
Kanchanaburi is a very
attractive Thailand province for everyone who like the green outdoor,
rivers, jungle, streams, waterfalls and a pristine
controllable environment away from chaos.
Some beautiful Thailand
temples are along the main highway to Kanchanaburi and
Erawan Waterfall. The road leads further to the
three pagoda pass,
which marks the border to
Myanmar. Its a very typical Thai rural
encounter at Kanchanaburi sugarcane county.

The Erawan
National Park area is mainly for the local
tourism out of Bangkok, rather seldom foreigners can be
spotted. Foreign tourist in Thailand usually prefer the beach areas
in
southern Thailand. It seems
that there is no promotion
done by the relevant |
|
Thai
organizations to show the foreign tourists the beauty of
western and northern Thailand. They only focus on beach
tourism in
southern Thailand. Doing
only very little to bring tourists into the border area. A
typical other destination is
Umphang, probably one of
the best outdoor destination in the country at all with the
biggest waterfall in Asia. Umphang is not far north of
Kanchanaburi province and it would need only a relative
short road access via Kamphaeng Phet province but they don't
do anything. Now it needs a
detour via Mae Sot to reach
this great area, that's more
than 500 km. |

There are plenty of foreign tourist and
travelers at Kanchanaburi to have a look for the
Bridge over the River Kwai but
beyond not many make it on their
Thailand vacation trip,
beside even the Thailand weather is very pleasant around
Kanchanaburi between November and April,
its something for
nature lover. |

Thailand is one of the very few countries on this planet,
together with
Myanmar where foreigners always have to pay
much more on many services than the local people,
entrance to Erawan waterfall is Baht 200,- for
foreigners and Baht 50,- for Thais, that's the same
at almost all other Thailand National Parks.

A 7 level waterfall actually means there are 7
falls. Most of
the visitors are around the lower level
falls. Up to the top is
almost an hour walk / climb. |

Trekking and rafting is offered by some travel agents and in
the hotels
and river resorts along the River Kwai Noi.
The waterfall
is at the Erawan
National Park Thailand. The area around is like made for trekking,
rafting, bamboo raft and other great outdoor because
of the River Kwai who supply the water from the
hilly area on the Thai Myanmar border. Since a
couple of years this water is collected into a huge
reservoir to produce electricity and the outflow is
called the River Kwai Noi.
This forms a
recreation area along the River Kwai for
thousands of Bangkok tourists every weekend and on the
other plenty of holidays. Thailand is somehow a
world champion of public holidays, on average every
week has at least one or two holidays. I wont
wonder, with such a great mountain and hilly jungle
outdoors, waterfalls, camping grounds, lush
vegetation and it still wont get cold what to do ?
working ? give me a break !
The
Erawan
National Park and Kanchanaburi
along the River Kwai noi is near
Thailand's frontier to
Myanmar or Burma, a
wilderness of mountain jungle, camping, great
outdoors, lush vegetation, rivers, huge dams with
great artificial lakes and floating communities.
Kanchanaburi and the Erawan falls
is still a remote area in Asia where you can
experience Thai outdoor adventure, great nature vacation
or holiday with a low level risk.

without major problems.
- Waterfalls
Waterfalls in
Thailand and elsewhere are created where a river
plunges vertically for some distance, ranging from
only a few meters to nearly 980 meters (more than
3,200 feet). A cascade waterfall occurs where the drop is
|
|
|
not vertical and the
stream pours steeply over the underlying
rocks. A rapids is usually a lesser drop
where the water churns over shallow rocks,
flowing more rapidly than in the pools both
above and below the fast water.

Waterfall Erosion
The pounding of the
water at the base of a Thai waterfall is a
powerful force for erosion, especially if the water
contains suspended sediment . Even at the lip of the
fall, the water gains extra erosive power as it
accelerates approaching the brink. For this reason,
waterfalls are temporary phenomena, geologically
speaking. While the surging water tears away at the
base of the falls, removing its rock foundations,
the scouring of the lip grinds back the brink of the
falls, decreasing t>
Recent uplift or
down-dropping of part of the Earths crust;
Diversion of a river by blockage of a preexisting
channel; or Differential erosion of valleys,
especially in glaciated areas.
In all cases, where a
major Thai river plunges over a waterfall,
geological processes must have been active within
the past few million years. Rarely are large
waterfalls older than a few tens of millions of
years, and most are less than a million years old.
Invariably the rock at the crest of the falls is one
of the harder varieties, resisting the down cutting
effects of the river.
A striking example of
the first type of waterfall is Victoria Falls on the
Zambezi River in southern Africa. The
geologically recent uplift of east Africa and the
faulting associated with the African Rift Valley
system provides the Zambezi River with the power
necessary to cut into the hard Although large
waterfalls are better known, small falls are more
commonly experienced by local and regional
residents. This small cascade tumbles over resistant
bedrock in southern Indiana. basaltic rock over
which it flows. At the edge of the basalt, the river
has eroded away softer layers below and has
gradually carved a canyon upstream into the basalts.
The fracturing of the basalts is most intense in two
nearly (but not quite) parallel directions, and the
river has cut a zigzag path working upstream, first
along one direction of weakness, then the other.
Presently it appears to be just at the point where
it will take another sharp bend.

Biggest Thai Waterfall at
Umphang Thee Lor Sue Water

Other examples of
waterfalls produced by uplift of plateaus include
Angel Falls in Venezuela ;the highest in the
world at 977 meters (3,212 feet); and the collection
of smaller waterfalls along the; fall line; at the
eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains and south
of Ranong Thailand.
Situated on the
border of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, Iguazu
Falls consists of 275 cascades spread across
nearly 3.3 kilometers (2 miles). With an average (nonflood)
discharge of 1,700 cubic meters per second (60,000
cubic feet per second), these falls are among the
most powerful in the world.
In Thailand a similar
but a
little bit smaller is the
Umphang Thee Lor Sue Water Fall.

River Diversion.
Niagara Falls is the
archetype for the second kind of waterfall;
namely, one produced by the diversion of a
preexisting river. The ancestral Niagara River
followed a course more or less parallel to the
current river for part of its course, and carved a
gorge similar in scale to the modern gorge. During
the last ice age, the old gorge was filled with
glacial debris, diverting the river into a new path
across the dolomite upland. The new gorge began at
the escarpment near Queenston, Ontario, which is
where the diverted (modern) Niagara River fell over
the edge of this upland. *
Away from the Niagara
escarpment, the hard dolomite shielded the
underlying soft shales from erosion. Flowpaths
beyond the escarpment traversed areas not protected
by this dolomite cap, and hence gradually eroded the
underlying glacial deposits. Over thousands of
years, the differential erosion created a vertical
waterfall.
It is estimated that
12,000 years ago, the falls were 11 kilometers
(7 miles) downstream from their present position.
The continuous removal of the shales at the base of
the falls has steadily undermined the dolomite cap,
causing its collapse and hence the ongoing retreat
of the falls upstream. Today the erosion continues,
but human modifications of the river's flow
have reduced the erosion rate.
|
Differential Valley
Erosion.
Probably the best
example of the last type of waterfall is Yosemite
Falls in California. Yosemite Falls (and many of
the other famous waterfalls in Yosemite National
Park) is the result of the powerful erosion of
Yosemite Valley by a glacier flowing down from the
High Sierra. The glacier in the main valley was
larger, and especially thicker, than the tributary
glaciers that flowed into it. The thick ice stream
carved a deep, flat-floored valley, and was much
more effective in doing this than the smaller, thin
tributary ice streams. When the ice melted away, the
result of the differential erosion between the main
and tributary glaciers left the floors of the
smaller glacial valleys perched high above the main
valley floor. Rivers such as the Yosemite now leap
over immense drops to meet the Merced River, which
flows at the bottom of the main valley.
In all of these
examples, the geologic activity producing the
waterfalls is quite recent; perhaps 10,000 to
15,000 years for Niagara Falls and Yosemite, and
probably somewhat longer in the case of Victoria
Falls. However, the uplift of east Africa still may
be occurring, likely at a rate of 2 to 3 centimeters
(about 1 inch) each year.
Without active
geologic change, whether variations in climate
as in the case of ice ages, or the slow, but
inexorable motions of plate tectonics , waterfalls
would soon cease to be part of the landscape.
The
beauty of Thai waterfalls and elsewhere is a combination of their ephemeral nature,
the magnificence of motion painted in the air, and
the insight they provide into the underlying working
of the Earth.
