Bangkok transport systems had significant improvements in
resent years.
This started with the BTS
Bangkok, also known as Skytrain plus the Bangkok subway
which is a underground train system to complement the
Skytrain. To improving
Bangkok transport
for a smooth Bangkok trip plenty had been done and gigantic
constructions have been made throughout the city.
Bangkok public transport had
been improved significantly by the BTS Bangkok and
underground to get taxi rides shorter and water trips on the
channels less needed. The old Bangkok train is still the
same and actually only real useful on longer distances and
for one of the best day trip Bangkok which is to
Ayutthaya. Bangkok airport link was a great push forward in
terms of how to travel in Bangkok since airport travel
became predictable.
The stunning Bangkok Airport
or Suvarnabhumi is a showcase of modern architecture,
only the organization doesn't work as it should but this is
nothing new, it was the same at the old Don Muang Airport.
Within the last few years
some gigantic bridges have been built to improve traffic
flow, notably the Taksin Bridge over the Chao Phraya River
and the even more gigantic "Megabridge" lifting a motorway
over some parts of the city.
In 2011 the Bangkok Airport
Rail Link has been finished and makes a ride from
downtown Bangkok City to the airport a short and reliable 20
minutes trip, but, yes but, as usual, the organization again
is lousy techniques are imported, organization is local.
They run the trains at almost 20 minutes interval which is
far to long, the result is rolling stock up to the brim.

link from Makkasan station and
the normal City Line from Phaya Thai station which again
directly linked to the BTS Station. Almost all Bangkok
transportation problems have a direct link to the uniformed
persons who do control and light switching.
-Transportation and moving
around.
The city is large (about 16 millions
inhabitants, nobody really
knows exactly) , its busy,
sometimes it’s dirty and is
full of interesting places
and panoramas. To find the
way around is not so easy
but with patience a mask
over nose and mouth if you
are on the street you will
handle it.
-
Bangkok transport has many
variants, this are:
- BTS Bangkok or Skytrain
and the Subway are by far
the best means of transport. Underground.
Take a walk or taxi to the
nearest station and be on
your way in air-conditioned
comfort, keep in mind you
are not alone, in particular
at rush hours which are in
the morning and from about 5
pm to 7 pm.
- If your nerves are strong
and you want to move really
fast, the best option are
motorbike taxis –
Actually the are more
expensive than normal taxis
since the guys know you are
ready to pay for the extra
speed. This is for sure not
the safest way of moving
around but the driver s
usually are careful and have
a good routine, take the
helmet ! The motorbike
taxi could also be used as
an extension to the BTS
Bangkok.
- Bangkok Tuk Tuks (3 wheeler
taxis) can provide a
quick ride but keep
in mind that you are
sitting in a open
vehicle exposed to
the dirty air
around you and tuk tuk’s
are very noisy on top of it,
they are slightly cheaper
than normal taxis but rather
useless to come through
Bangkok traffic quick
because at the back they are
just as wide as a car.
Negotiate a price before you
board.
- The river and channel
ferry service offers a
scenic and fast trip around, its also a great
relaxed sightseeing tour to
move on the Chao Phraya
River and small waterways.
Decades ago there were many
more waterways but most have
been filled up and converted
to roads. Service is only
during daylight hours. Have
a look at your hotel for a
ferry map including
stations.
- Bangkok Taxis
are quite cheap since
salaries are low. The
problem with taxis is they
stick in the jam most of the
time. The best what you can
do is take a hotel which is
near the inner ring road
since once you enter the
ring road everything moves
fast only in the morning and
evening during rush hour it
gets sticky also at the ring
road.
|
- To Walk,
its not a bad idea
but don’t forget a
breathing mask and
maybe earplugs, its
dirty and noisy at
almost every road. Ignore the
hands which try to
shake yours they
only want to pull
you into their
shops. |

BTS Bangkok |
- Forget public
buses and trains in
Bangkok city, except the
elevated trains such as the
BTS Bangkok
and the
Airport Link, its simply a
problem by any means.
In general to move around
take a hotel near
the ring road to
easily |
|
escape the traffic
chaos, the hotel
also should be
somewhere close to the BTS Skytrain and subway which
brings the hotel selection
automatically down to the
Sukhumvit, Ratchadamri,
Silom and Surawong area.
There are dozens maybe
hundreds of Bangkok hotels
around there in almost every
price range.
Some like Bangkok city,
others don’t, but it
wont matter how its
twisted and turned
its one of the most
fascinating places
on earth. Bangkok
city has great
shopping malls with
very affordable
items for shopping as long as
they are made in Thailand,
everything imported gets
expensive, there are great
night markets, floating
markets and actually there
is a market at every second
corner, boardwalk,
encroached on the street,
under the flyover of the
highway, under the escalator
to the BTS Bangkok , that’s
the elevated train and
elsewhere where nobody would
ever dare to put a shop, in
Bangkok city they do.
Some of the world's best
hotels are around, such
as Oriental Hotel on the
riverside, thousands of
restaurants catering to any
taste, street food with
crickets, bugs and fried
cockroaches, fried rats and
tom yam, the famous Thai
soup with seafood and other
stuff included. Bangkok nightlife is not
only the greatest in the
Orient; it’s the best on
planet earth and the city is
one of the best shopping
destination in Asia.
There are pagodas cum
monastery called Wat in
Thai language, myriads of
shrines for the ghosts at
every building, monks
walking in the early morning
to get their rice bowl
filled and people praying to
Buddha to find the lucky
numbers for the lottery.
Bangkok city is fun and a
great way to enjoy vacation.
Over the Chao Phraya into
Thonburi you can tour the
famous klongs. To the north is the old
capital of Ayutthaya with a
stunning historical park
showing how it was in the
old days. Ayutthaya was the
second capital of the
Kingdom of Siam for over 400
years. Travelers in the past
told about glittering
palaces and temples. The
Myanmar burned the city in
1767 and took thousands of
Thais with them back to
Burma or today who
functioned as teachers for
dancing, architecture and
various other means. One
constant figure
among others is Thai
food as at this
Sukhumvit food
court. |

Bangkok to
Phuket

View from
Sarasin
Bridge |
There are
also ticket
offices
allover the
island.
There is no
train
service from
Bangkok to
Phuket. The
buses
leave Phuket
Town
overland bus
terminal
from 4 pm
until 6.30
pm every
hour.
Leaving
Bangkok to
Phuket the
bus will
take the
road over
the Sarasin
Bridge into
Phang Nga
Province. A
good 4 lane
highway with
dangerous
curves and
bends leads
to Phang Nga
City. On
your trip the
bus will
pass Surat
Thani,
Chumphon and
stop just
before
Chumphon at
a huge bus
stop with
dozens of
open air
restaurants
and shops.
After some
hours behind
|
|
Chumphon the
coastal town
of
Hua Hin
is passed
after after
about 3
hours and
the southern
bus
terminal is
reached.
There are
taxis and
minibuses for your
trip to down
town, the
cheapest is a
minibus for
Baht 40,- per head.
The most expensive
but by far the
fasted is a ride
with the motorbike
taxi for about Baht
300,- to down town.
Actually the
best to do
in terms of
traffic at
the end of
your Bangkok
to Phuket
trip is,
take a taxi
to Wongwian
Yai BTS
Bangkok
station and
use the BTS
train |
