Bangkok and Thailand is a
paradise for the bargain hunter. Especially the street
markets of Bangkok offer almost everything a consumer can
think about it.
A journey through the bargain
labyrinths via tough heckling can start at the Patpong
night market just in front of the go-go bars with the nice
Thai ladies who wait for you.
Thai street food also gives a
opportunity to learn about Thai Kitchen on location in front
of you. But you better be aware of 2 two subjects related to
any Bangkok street food and market. The first is, all the
items you see are laying there probably already for hour
maybe even days and they are usually not covered.
Bangkok
and practically all Thailand has a terrible air pollution
problem due to traffic and other factors, actually almost
nobody cares about the air pollution issue. That means all
this dirt in the air will settle partly on the street food
or the food offered in the markets.
If you buy something
from the market in Bangkok and elsewhere you can at least take it home and clean it
before eating, this hardly works with a fried chicken etc.
you find at the street market or with the soup pot without a
cover.
The second issue with Bangkok
markets and street food is the
hygienic, almost all the people don’t care very much
about cleanliness and you will find this out when the
stomach hurts. Especially dangerous are non heated food
items like vegetable, salad and in particular mixtures like
the famous papaya pok pok.
The next problem at the Bangkok
street markets is, they always use water from the tab
and everyone who know Thailand and other countries will
tell, never
|
|
let tab water enter your body,
even if its boiled. Every reasonable restaurant in Bangkok and Thailand uses
water from the bottle, also this water sometimes is not
good, in particular when it comes from the big plastic
containers.
So, if you are hungry in
Bangkok and elsewhere in
Thailand go to a real
restaurant, they are
usually also very cheap and
clean. |
|
Even very
narrow side streets and boardwalks offer
a kaleidoscope of exotic markets with
sometimes strange colors, smells and tastes.
Very
interesting markets in Bangkok are in China
Town, where still are some of the most
important markets of Bangkok. When the city
was founded in about 1782 Chinese traders
started their business there.
Today, in the
small streets still many of the typical
Chinese houses can be seen where at the open
ground floor is the sales and storage area
and the upper floor serves as living room. The same can also be found at Phuket, Penang
and all the way down to Singapore. Only |

Although much smaller, but
similar busy is Pahurat the little India of
Bangkok north of Chinatown.

cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and

Bangkok markets are not only a hub
for tourists, but also for goods
from all over Asia, from Cambodia,
Laos and Vietnam to Afghanistan and
Tibet. The entire range to get

million people in the sauna
temperatures have a look on about
9,000 stalls and shops. There are
other myriad of air-conditioned
