- Bangkok and Thailand is a
paradise for the bargain hunter. Especially the street
markets of Bangkok offer almost everything a consumer can
think about it.
A journey through the bargain
labyrinths via tough heckling can start at the Patpong
night market just in front of the go-go bars with the nice
Thai ladies who wait for you.
Thai street food also gives a
opportunity to learn about Thai Kitchen on location in front
of you. But you better be aware of 2 two subjects related to
any Bangkok street food and market. The first is, all the
items you see are laying there probably already for hour
maybe even days and they are usually not covered.
Bangkok
and practically all Thailand has a terrible air pollution
problem due to traffic and other factors, actually almost
nobody cares about the air pollution issue. That means all
this dirt in the air will settle partly on the street food
or the food offered in the markets.
If you buy something
from the market in Bangkok and elsewhere you can at least take it home and clean it
before eating, this hardly works with a fried chicken etc.
you find at the street market or with the soup pot without a
cover.
The second issue with Bangkok
markets and street food is the
hygienic, almost all the people don’t care very much
about cleanliness and you will find this out when the
stomach hurts. Especially dangerous are non heated food
items like vegetable, salad and in particular mixtures like
the famous papaya pok pok.
The next problem at the Bangkok
street markets is, they always use water
|
|
|
from the tab
and everyone who know Thailand and other countries will
tell, never let tab water enter your body,
even if its boiled. Every reasonable restaurant in Bangkok and Thailand uses
water from the bottle, also this water sometimes is not
good, in particular when it comes from the big plastic
containers.
So, if you are hungry in
Bangkok and elsewhere in
Thailand go to a real
restaurant, they are
usually also very cheap and
clean. |
|
Even very
narrow side streets and boardwalks offer
a kaleidoscope of exotic markets with
sometimes strange colors, smells and tastes.
Very
interesting markets in Bangkok are in China
Town, where still are some of the most
important markets of Bangkok. When the city
was founded in about 1782 Chinese traders
started their business there.
Today, in the
small streets still many of the typical
Chinese houses can be seen where at the open
ground floor is the sales and storage area
and the upper floor serves as living room. The same can also be found at Phuket, Penang
and all the way down to Singapore. Only |

One
of the most famous markets in
Bangkok is the
Chatuchak weekend market.
Many
trader who offer their goods on
Bangkoks non food markets come to
the Chatuchak weekend market
to source their goods for sale. At
right you can see some
cheap hip hop or
bling bling
jewelry. They also sell
other iced out gear and hip hop
earrings
Dozens of bright booths try to sell
upholstery, fashion bags,
buckles, bling bling, pins and all
kinds of "Hello Kitty "imitation.
Others sell school supplies and
children's shoes.

Although much smaller, but
similar busy is Pahurat the little India of
Bangkok north of Chinatown.
Sikhs and Hindus plus the smell of
cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and
perfume plus he rhythms of Indian
music in Bollywood-style.
Bangkok markets are not only a hub
for tourists, but also for goods
from all over Asia, from Cambodia,
Laos and Vietnam to Afghanistan and
Tibet. The entire range to get
at Chatuchak, Bangkok's biggest
market. Every weekend a quarter of a
million people in the sauna
temperatures have a look on about
9,000 stalls and shops. There are
other myriad of air-conditioned
shopping malls of the city
frequented by younger Thais as hip
and trendy hangouts.
At
Bangkok Chatuchak market you get
almost everything, tanks full of
Siamese fighting fish, antiques,

Thai street food |
There
are Thai street food vendor at the
boardwalk, that's the same place
they also use to drive the small
motorbikes and the people, where
should they walk? No need to ask,
because no one cares about such
things in Thailand.
Maybe
just pick up some snacks from the
street food vendor who stands in
between with his street food cart,
Thais smile and call it "maybenrei",
means doesn't matter, has it packed
into a plastic bag and take it away.
Thai
street food is cheap and
sometimes good and sometimes they
carry you to the hospital, every
year people die after eating this
stuff. Everyone who eat street food
should think about how to make good
and healthy food for practically
nothing, typical meals are below one
US$, what to get for this ?
Food
stalls and carts are everywhere and
dozens of them at any Bangkok market
conveying exotic images, colors and
get the hungry into a quick
satisfaction. The line the street,
they are mounted at the back of the
pick up truck, screwed onto
motorbike everything goes,
everything is fast and often also
the run to the toilet will be very
fast.
There
is chicken, pork and fish
usually with chili and red curry
plus some vegetable, the most
dangerous dishes are fish balls
since there it goes the junk instead
of being thrown away. There are also
noodle dishes, vegetables, rice,
vegetarian food, halal street food
and more.
Another real danger is, all this
is cooked with contaminated water
(all tub water in Thailand is not
good) and oil which is used for
days, on top of it the plates and
spoons are cleaned again and again
in the same water for the whole day
since they don't have running water
and it is difficult to get fresh
water beside the road. Chinese style
Dim Sum is also popular for a quick
take, or what about some cock
roaches, crickets and other bugs for
the hungry in between? Maybe a nice
Bangkok BBQ, chicken wings or legs?
Bangkok food markets are everywhere.
So are Bangkok restaurants offering
all kind of foods.
Convenient stores such as 7-11 offer
hot dogs and hamburger, if you
are happy they have some bread, many
times not, because some ladies from
the north of Thailand trying to make
some small money don't know that hot
dogs and hamburgers go together with
bread, its a helter skelter of
people who don't know what they are
doing but want to make quick cash.
For
good Thai food visit a real
restaurant, they might be a bit more
expensive but keep in mind you only
have one body, so be nice to him!
It is
obvious that the employees at this
convenient stores never get a
education how to do the work. Since
they don't get paid orderly most of
them sleep somewhere in the back.
The best is probably to buy some
fruits from the street vendor, buy a
bottle of water and clean them on
your own, sit down and have some
Thai street food. |
