From Airport Bangkok and to
Airport via a Rail Link
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi has
a official annual capacity
of 45 million passengers a
year,
and eventually will be able
to cope with 100 million
passengers a year.
That needs a rail link
to bring and carry away the
passengers efficiently. To
do so a mainly elevated rail
was built but has already a
long delay to finish the
work and open the route to
the airport near Bangkok.
Originally the end of 2007
was the target to open the
airport line, it will be opened by the
end of 2009.
The Bangkok airport rail
link start at Phaya Thai
in the city centre, and run
via Makkasan and City
Airport Terminal (CAT), to
the international airport.
At the airport the rail
will terminate at an
underground station beneath
the main terminal. The CAT
has 32 airline check-in
counters, automatic baggage
handling system, and the
usual flight
information for passengers.
The eight-station
double-track elevated and
underground line will have
automatic rail operation.
Maximum rail speed
is160km/h.
Two types of
airport transportation
service are operated. The
express service called SA
Express run non-stop from Makkasan - CAT to Bangkok
Airport. A separate commuter
rail called SA City Line
will run from Phaya Thai
station to the airport and
serve six intermediate
stations.
Passengers will be able
to connect with BTS
Skyrail's Sukhumvit Line
at Phaya Thai and with MRT's
Blue Line at Phetchaburi.
There will also be
connections with SRT's local
rails at a number of
stations. |

The railroad cars or
railway carriages are
supplied by Siemens. The
rail consists of four
four-car rails for SA
Express. The express rails
are equipped with a separate
baggage compartment. The SA
City Line operate five
three-car rails. Capacity
can be increased by coupling
three and four-car sets to a
total of 10 cars.
Both Line operates at
15-minute intervals;
this will be increased to 10
minutes. Actually the
Bangkok airport line is
designed to operate rails
at two-minute intervals.
Start to end travel times
are estimated at 15 minutes
for SA Express and 27

minutes for SA City Line.
At the highway which runs
parallel to the elevated
rail itsup to an hour and
increasing since the car
traffic expands
exponentially, this figure
does not include the time to
reach the highway which can
easily be longer than the
whole road travel time on
the highway.
Traffic is estimated at
4000 passengers per hour per
direction at the beginning
and could reach 50,000
passenger by 2030. SA
City Line, as a commuter
operation, will be much more
busy, starting at about
37,000 and reaching about
200.000 184,000 by 2030. The
Bangkok airport line will be
integrated into the mass
rapid transit network of the
future. |
